For Millie, Co-Founder & COO of NOAP, fighting for the best ingredients was personal!
Creating NOAP was personal for me.
Twelve years ago I was hit hard with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Just getting out of bed in the morning was a huge challenge for me. Carrying grocery bags? Forget about it.
I spent years working with various doctors and nutritionists, but each recommended cocktail would either not work at all, or it would be a bandaid fix that temporarily worked, and then eventually I would always end up back with chronic and debilitating pain.
The pain was frustrating and difficult to deal with but what broke the camel’s back was when I got fed up with the loss of 75% of my hair and having to keep it up in a bun all the time, it messed with my self esteem!
I was fortunate to find Dr. Weiss 4 years ago, a doctor who had left his NYC practice to start a whole food plant based treatment center at his new farm in New Jersey. Honestly, I was skeptical at first, but I figured what have I got to lose at this point? He suggested a drug free program that focused around a strict whole food plant based diet. Within a week in a half, my pain had greatly subsided, and by the end of the first month I was pain free and was able to start exercising again. Oh, and I was able to carry groceries again!
During one of my visits, I said to Dr Weiss, I wish I could use hair and beauty products that won’t add toxicity to my body since RA had caused me to be allergic and highly sensitive to everything due to the overload of inflammation (clearly a premonition to NOAP).
He responded by saying you can make products that you can use and feel good about it!
I never forgot this!
When Kate and I started to brainstorm about NOAP, I knew this was the opportunity to create products that I can use and not worry about getting itchy, breaking out in a rash but most importantly toxicity! It took working through different combinations of ingredients, lots of sampling to get to the final formula. We stuck with it!
It was critical to me that we use only clean, high performance ingredients that are plant based, vegan, dye and mica free, sulfate free, paraben free and sustainable that wouldn’t be harmful to our bodies. Also, simultaneously I could feel good about making our small imprint on reducing plastic in the environment.
We simply wanted to make the best plastic free shampoo and the best plastic free conditioners we possibly could without sacrificing performance.
Today I am 4 years into my whole food plant based lifestyle, and my RA pain has not returned. So sticking to a healthy lifestyle has been an easy choice for someone like me to make. I’ll never forget the pain and suffering that RA brought into my life, and I am grateful that I found Dr. Weiss and whole food plant based living when I did.
